At some point in their life, many people will be informed by their dentist that they require a gum graft to correct gum recession. Many people do not even realize their gums have receded because it can happen slowly. This is also one of the reasons it is so important to visit your dentist on a regular basis.

Gum recession happens when the tissue that surrounds the tooth pulls away from the tooth. This exposes more of the tooth or even the tooth’s root. This can lead to cavities, sensitivity, and if severe enough can it lead to tooth loss. If you can see the recession when you smile, it can also affect your self-confidence.

An excellent way to repair the damage and to prevent any further dental issues is to have connective tissue grafting. Connective tissue grafting involves a very small incision in the roof of your mouth to harvest a small piece of your own gum tissue, which is then placed in the area of recession. After a short period of healing, you won’t even be able to tell that you had recession to begin with, and the tissue from the roof of your mouth grows back just as it was.
